  • BASEBALL

    HEAD COACH - DEREK IRONS

    Derek Irons enters his seventh season at the helm of the Eagles baseball program. During his tenure at OMHS, the Eagles reached the playoffs four consecutive seasons, a school record. The Eagles have also set the school record for wins in a season with 33 along with twice winning 30 games, which is the second highest mark in school history. The Eagles have finished three seasons ranked #2 in the state by the Alabama Sports Writers Association. There have been twelve All-State selections from those teams, and twenty-eight players to continue their baseball careers collegiately. Oak Mountain has also received the Team Academic Excellence Award from the American Baseball Coaches Association for six consecutive years, and is the only high school in Alabama to do so.

    Irons took over the Eagle program after a seven year stint as the head coach at Charles Henderson High School. The Trojans captured back to back state championships in 2013 and 2014. Those teams combined for an 18 game playoff win streak. The Trojans spent 18 weeks ranked #1 by the ASWA and were in the top ten during the entire seven seasons.

    Coach Irons has been chosen Coach of the Year on twelve occasions by outlets such as the National Federation of High School Coaches, the Alabama Sports Writers Association, the Alabama Baseball Coaches Association, and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He has a career record of 427-160 (73%) and has also amassed 54 career playoff victories.

    Irons was a catcher at Dora High School, then played first base for two years at Bevill State in Fayette. He then obtained his undergraduate and masters' degrees from the University of Alabama before starting his coaching career. In 2021, he was inducted into the Walker County Sports Hall of Fame for his success as a player and a coach.

    Irons and his wife Leslie have been married for fourteen years and have three children: Luke, Alex, and Kate. They are members of the Church at Brook Hills. The Irons’ co-founded WOD for Water-Troy, an organization that has raised over $550,000 for the sake of clean water globally.   • BOYS BASKETBALL

    HEAD COACH - JOEL FLOYD

    Joel Floyd spent the 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 seasons as the varsity assistant for the Spain Park High School Boys Basketball team. While there, he assisted in all aspects of the program from the weight room to court. During the 2020-2021 season Spain Park was consistently ranked in the top 5 and was ranked number 1 multiple times. The Jags finished with the second most wins in school history with a 27-8 record. They made the third trip to the Final Four in school history, eventually losing to Enterprise on a last second shot in double overtime, 52-51. The following season, 2021-2022, Floyd helped to lead the Jags to another 27-8 season and a second straight trip to the Final Four. While at Spain Park, Floyd also was a Varsity Assistant Volleyball Coach. He helped to lead Spain Park to a 47-4 record, #5 ranking nationally, and a 7A State Championship in 2021.

    Joel Floyd, joined Pelham High School in 2007 as an assistant coach. In 2009, he took over as the head coach of the Pelham Panthers Boys Basketball team. After becoming the coach of Pelham High School, the Panthers quickly turned around the direction of the program. The 2009-10 inaugural season for Coach Floyd’s tenure was a successful one. The Panthers achieved their first 10 win season in over a decade. In the following season, 2010-11, the Panthers reached the Sub-Regionals playoff game, the first time since 1996, losing to Spain Park in a closely fought game. In the 2011-12 season the Panthers had the first winning record in at least 20 years with a record of 17-12. The Panthers again reached the Sub-Regionals. Coach Floyd was named the Birmingham News Shelby County Coach of the Year for this season as well. The 2012-13 season the Panthers won the regular season Area Championship and hosted the Area Tournament. Again in the following season, 2013-14, the Panthers won the regular season Area Championship and hosted the Area Tournament. This time the Panthers made it to the Sub-Regionals. Coach Floyd was also named the Birmingham News Shelby County and the Shelby County Reporter Coach of the Year for the 2013-14 season. He led the Panthers to the best record in school history, 23-8. Coach Floyd led the Panthers to back to back Regional appearances in 2016 and 2017. The 2017 team made the Elite 8, losing to state champion Paul Bryant 49-46. Floyd took the Panthers back to the Sweet 16 again in his final season at Pelham in 2019. Prior to coming to Pelham High School, Floyd taught and coached in Dallas, TX for 4 years.

    Coach Floyd grew up in Iowa and attended Southeastern Community College to play baseball and basketball. Both programs were nationally ranked while he competed at SCC. Following his playing career he finished his college education at University of Northern Iowa. Coach Floyd is entering his 20th year as a teacher and coach. He and his wife Stephanie have four children, Alyssa (22), Bailey (23), Blake (19), and Molly Bleu (16)

  • GIRLS BASKETBALL

    HEAD COACH - AIMEE HARRIS

    Coach Harris enters her first season at the helm of the women’s basketball program. She’s spent the past two seasons (2022 -2024) as the head coach of the eighth-grade girls at Oak Mountain Middle School. Before coming to Oak Mountain Middle School, she served as the middle school head coach, varsity assistant coach, and finally in 2020 the varsity head coach at Westminster School at Oak Mountain (2018 - 2022). As the middle school head coach, the Lady Knights won two area championships. During that time period the varsity girls made appearances in the Final Four and the Elite Eight. To understand her as a coach you have to appreciate her journey as a player. Her love for basketball began in Starkville, MS where she was a multi-sport athlete and an all-state point guard for the Starkville Yellow Jackets. She was a key leader in two Final Four appearances for the Lady Jackets. In 1997, she received a full scholarship to lead the inaugural women’s basketball team at Samford University as a point guard. While there, she was named to the Academic All- Conference and Women’s All-Conference Teams. She earned Samford Women’s Basketball MVP Captains Award all four of her playing years. To this date, she is still the all-time steals leader at Samford. Upon graduation from Samford, she became a graduate assistant coach for the women’s basketball program at the University of North Alabama. While there, she earned a Master’s in Community Counseling. Coach Harris and her husband Justin have been married for over 20 years. They have three children: Caed(17), Vivian(15), and Verity(11). They are in Oak Mountain schools.

  • FOOTBALL

    HEAD COACH - Shane Mccomb smccomb@shelbyed.org

    Coach McComb comes to Oak Mountain from Palm Desert CA where he was the Head Football Coach for the past 7 years. McComb won 53 games including the 2020 season that only had 5 games and went 33-2 in his last 35 Region games leading the Aztecs. McComb led the Aztecs to 6 straight District Championships. While his Defense led the league in points allowed and turnovers the past 6 seasons which included at least a co defensive league MVP all 6 years at LB. his offense has also avg 35 points per game and broke the school rushing record two straight years and also had a QB throw for more yards in a season then any QB in the past 25 years at Palm Desert. While at PD McComb helped guide the program to moving up 5 playoff divisions and 6 straight appearances. While also taking his team to compete in non-league games in UT, AZ and TX. Prior to Palm Desert McComb was the Defensive Coordinator/LB coach at Alamogordo High School a 6 A school in New Mexico for one year where his Defense was one of the leading units in the state in points allowed per game and turnovers. McComb began His Coaching Career at Rockford University in Illinois as LB coach and strength coordinator where he coached for 2 years. At Rockford McComb coached back to back All-American LB’S.

    As a Player McComb was an all-county and Defensive league MVP Linebacker at Hemet High School CA. He was a 2-year starter at LB and all mission Conference player at Riverside Community College CA before attending Upper Iowa University. At Upper Iowa McComb was a 2-year starter and Team Captain and invited to play in an ALL-American game for Division 2 after the 2009 Season. McComb has a Bachelor Degree from Upper Iowa University and Masters from Rockford University. McComb resides here in Alabama with his Wife Janette, son Jayden and their daughter Penelope.

    HEAD COACH - David DiPIAZZA

    In his third year as the boy’s coach, Di Piazza led the Eagles to a11-7-5 overall record, and a playoff appearance versus Spain Park. He had four players nominated for the All-State, County and Metro Teams as well as Corbitt Grundhoefer named to the North-South All-Star Game.

    Di Piazza was the girl’s soccer coach at Oak Mountain High School before taking over the boy’s program in 2019. During his high school coaching career, he has led teams to six state titles (2008-10, 2012, 2014-15), was a four-time National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Coach of the Year (2009, 2012, 2014-15), four-time National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) State Coach of the Year (2008-09, 2014-15), four-time Birmingham News Metro City Coach of the Year (2008-09, 2012, 2014), two-time Ray Woodard Coach of the Year (2002, 2012), Birmingham News State Coach of the Year (2008), and NFHS State Coach of the Year (2015). Di Piazza has a career record of 448-133-47.

    He led OMHS to the 2015 7A girls’ title in his first season. Prior to his time at Oak Mountain, Di Piazza led John Carroll Catholic High School to the 2014 5A girl's state championship. He was the head boy's coach at John Carroll from 2002-06 and then 2008-14, leading his squad to the 5A Boy's state title in 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2012.

    Di Piazza has also served as head women’s coach at Birmingham-Southern College (2016-2018), the men's soccer coach at Wallace State Community College in Hanceville, Ala. (2005), as well as assistant women's soccer coach at Samford University in 1998.

    He is a 1998 BSC alumnus, and played for long-time men's soccer coach Preston Goldfarb from 1996-97. Di Piazza was part of two conference championships, a regional title, and two NAIA National Tournament appearances, including a runner-up finish in 1996 under Goldfarb.

    Di Piazza graduated from BSC with a Bachelor of Arts in History in 1998 and went on to earn his Master of Arts in Education from UAB in 1999. He is married to Jessica Di Piazza and has four children, Anna Marie (20), Micah (15), Eleanor (6) and Henry (4).

  • GIRLS SOCCER

    HEAD COACH - CHRIS BLIGHT

    In his fifth year as the girl’s coach, Chris Blight led the Eagles to a 22-3-1 overall record and the team's 4th State Championship. He had six players nominated for the All-State, County and Metro Teams as well as a player named to the North-South All-Star Game. Blight was named the county and Metro Coach of the year. In 2020 the Eagles were ranked number 1 in the nation before the season was ended by the Covid-19 Pandemic, and Blight was named the NFHS South Region Coach of the year.

    Prior to Oak Mountain, Blight led the Tigers in Auburn for four years and had a career record of 69-8-6, taking the Tigers to two State Finals. Blight was also an assistant Coach for the AUM men's program for two years--where the Warhawks made an appearance in the NAIA national tournament--and an assistant coach for the Birmingham Hammers in the NPSL before they became the Birmingham Legion.

    After moving from England Blight graduated from Huntingdon College with a Bachelors in Physical Education and also captained the Hawks soccer team for 4 years. He then went on to earn his Masters in Kinesiology from Auburn University at Montgomery. He is married to Katie Blight and is the proud father two children, Henry (8) and Harper (6).

  • SOFTBALL

    HEAD COACH - JORDAN BURSON

    In his first year as head softball coach at Oak Mountain, Burson led the eagles to a 21-19 record. He had 3 players nominated for All-state, county, and Metro teams.

    Prior to joining Oak Mountain, Burson was the head coach at Oakman High School in Jasper, Alabama. In 2019, Oakman finished 20-17 and made a late season run. Oakman grabbed an area and regional title before falling short at the state tournament and finishing 5th in 3A softball. The 2020 season was cut short due to covid and the team finished with a 9-2 record.

    Coach Burson served as an assistant coach at Hewitt- Trussville for 2 years and Thompson for 2 years prior to taking the head softball job at Oakman.

    Burson attended the University of Alabama and served as a softball manager under Patrick Murphy and the Alabama softball team. In 5 years (2009-2013) at the Capstone, Alabama softball won 3 SEC championships and the National title in 2012.

    Head Coach - JAMES MOORE

    Beginning in 1998 with the inaugural Oak Mountain Cross Country program, Coach James Moore has been coaching OM distance runners for 23 years. Coach Moore currently serves as the head Cross Country coach. and also as an assistant Track coach (distance). Over the course of his career Coach Moore has had the honor of Coaching 100s of State Qualifiers, dozens of Individual State Champions, and future NCAA athletes. Coach Moore currently teaches Honors 9th English in addition to his coaching duties. He lives in Alabaster with his wife of 23 years and their two children. In his spare time he enjoys playing guitar, hiking trails, and of course running.

  • GOLF

    HEAD COACH - Susan Schwartz

    Coach Schwartz is from Montgomery, Al. She is a 1982 graduate of Auburn University at Montgomery where she was a cheerleader and met her husband Scott, who was on the basketball team. She has a degree in Secondary Education, Social Science and is a Nationally Board Certified Teacher. Schwartz taught US Government for 5 years and then stayed home for 22 years to raise her two sons, Andrew and Luke, who are both OMHS graduates. She is one of the founders of ACE All-stars of Alabama, a competitive cheerleading company. She returned to teaching in 2011 at OMHS and is currently teaching AP US Government and Economics. She became Girls Golf Coach in 2014.

  • HEAD COACH - Betsy Rogers

    Coach Rogers joined the Oak Mountain Athletic Department in 2019. Before this she coached and taught at Woodlawn High School-Baton Rouge for 13 years. In those years, Coach Rogers not only coached track and field, but also served as head coach of girl’s soccer and boy’s and girl’s cross country, and as an assistant coach for volleyball. While at Woodlawn-BR, Coach Rogers took over a girl’s track program that had less than five athletes. Under Coach Rogers, the roster jumped to 25, they won an East Baton Rouge Parish Championship, routinely competed for district titles, and sent several girls to the state championship meet in addition to having several athletes go on to compete at the college level.

    Coach Rogers’s first season at Oak Mountain was cancelled halfway through due to COVID, but not before the boys had a fourth place finish at the state indoor meet and four athletes finished in the top three in five events. Her second season saw a very unusual indoor season with limitations on competition, but the OMHS team qualified 24 athletes and the 4x400 team finished 3rd. The outdoor season was a great success with 28 athletes qualifying for the state meet including all 6 relays. The boys team finished 5th in the state and OMHS had athletes in the 3200, 800, 4x400 and 4x800 reach the podium. This season also saw several school records broken and five of its team members moving on to compete at the college level.

    Coach Rogers is a graduate of Auburn University and Louisiana State University. She is married and has three children- Rhys (9), Sean (9), and Rhett (6).

    HEAD COACH - Abby Mire

    Abby Mire has been coaching throughout her teaching career. This includes coaching softball from 2014-2018 and volleyball for the 2015 season, both at Calera Middle School. She currently coaches both the Girls and Boys Tennis Team here at Oak Mountain High School.

  • BOYS GOLF

    HEAD COACH - RYAN BREWER

    Coach Brewer enters his 19th year of teaching and coaching. He joined the Oak Mountain staff in January 2024. His role at Oak Mountain High School is the Head JV Football Coach and the Head Boys Golf Coach. His coaching career began in 2006 at Riverchase Middle School, where he served as an assistant coach for football and baseball for two years. In 2008, Coach Brewer became the Athletic Director and Head Football Coach at Helena Middle School, helping to open the brand-new school and build the athletic program. During his six-year tenure at HMS, he also served as an assistant baseball coach for one year, Head Wrestling Coach for two years, and Head Golf Coach for four years. In 2014, he began his varsity coaching career at Russellville High School as the Offensive Coordinator and Head Golf Coach. While at Russellville, his team went 27-9 with three playoff appearances. His golf team won the AHSAA State Championship in 2015 and finished runner-up in 2016. In the fall of 2017, Coach Brewer returned to his hometown and became the Offensive Coordinator and Assistant Athletic Director at Haleyville High School, where he spent two years. In the fall of 2019, Coach Brewer had the opportunity to be part of opening Orange Beach High School. He served as an assistant football coach, Head Wrestling Coach, and Head Golf Coach. In his last position before coming to Oak Mountain, Coach Brewer was the Head Football Coach, Athletic Director, and Head Golf Coach at Hanceville High School for three years. Coach Brewer is happily married to his wife, Katie. They have three sons: Boston (17), Deacon (15), and Hudson (13).
